2008 New York Auto Show: Scion Hako Coupe Concept

Scion Hako Coupe Concept

We know that Scion has been experiencing a bit of a slump lately. So when we saw them in New York we were hoping to see something brilliant that would blow our minds and get us excited about what is to come. When we saw the concept that they had on display our minds were definitely blown away – but not in the good way.

The Hako Coupe concept is more than just a little odd. The people at Scion took their inspiration for the concept from the “emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters.” This might be true – but they should have realized that what they like may not be exactly what consumers over in the U.S. would like. Judging by the reactions that it got it would seem that we were right.

There are some things about it that we wouldn’t change. The interior of the Hako is full of storage compartments that could hold anything you would ever want to keep inside your car. Now all they have to do is to change the look and color of the outside – making it look a little less boxy – and maybe they can sell it. Scion insists that they are gearing the Hako coupe to the younger generation – but it seems that they might have to go back to the drawing board for this one.
