Officially Unveiled - The 2009 Subaru Forester

 2009 Subaru Foresters

On the heels of Subaru’s official press release regarding their new 2009 Forester, we’ve snagged a few glossy photos and nitty details about one of the worst-kept car secrets in recent memory. We expect to have more info in the near future, for now though you’ll just have to revel in the upgraded plastic.

The 2009 Forester, of course, comes with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as all other do (wo-hoo). A heavy-duty raised four-wheel independent suspension system and nearly 9 inches of ground clearance help make the Forester safer around the twisties and more comfortable on rough terrain. The biggest change is the all-new chassis - which is a tad longer, growing 3.6 inches to make an even 103, and includes a double-wishbone rear suspension. The changes are said to improve crash-worthiness, improve handling, and offer a bit more interior room.

Speaking of safety, all models get standard side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor - you know these babies sit up high. A Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system comes standard on all models now as well, a first for Subaru. Four-wheel disc ABS brakes with a Brake Assist safety system help ensure your trip through the mountains for a grocery pick-up stops as safely as it started.

On the interior, new including double-stitched fabrics and high-grade plastics offer a bit more ‘quality’ than previous models, borderlining on ’premuim’ (ok, we’re stretching it a bit). For a few more bucks Subaru will throw in a slick  navigation system and an upgraded audio system that’ll come pre-wired for XM or SIRIUS Satellite Radio. You’ll even get an auxiliary audio input jack to play your favorite pirated (kidding) MP3’s from your iPod.

Now onto the serious bit, powerplant time. Nothing new to report though, unfortunately. The ‘09 model gets your choice of a naturally aspirated or turbocharged/intercooled 2.5-liter Boxer engine. On the uppity, both have been revised for a bit more low-end and mid-range torque for spirited driving.

The all new Forester comes offered in a wide array of models, with the 2.5 X being one of the best values in the crossover SUV segment and the range-topping Forester L.L.Bean Edition offering more luxury without compromising too much of the vehicle’s sporty nature. Expect pricing from the low to high $20’s range depending on flavor.
