Lamborghini Celebrates 3000 Murciélago Copies Sold
Named after a courageous and spirited bull named Murcielago, Lamborghini’s two seater V12 fitted with the famous gull-wing doors recently sold their 3,000th copy of their $300k car, and it only took five years. While a few thousand units may sound like child’s play compared to what companies like Honda and General Motors pump out (on a weekly bases no less), it’s really a tremendous accomplishment when you’re talking supercar.
Replacing the Diablo in 2002, the Murcielago is completely hand assembled with a body made entirely of carbon fiber except for a steel roof and door panels. The coupe, known as the LP640 model since 2006, has a 6.5 liter V-12 engine belching out a supercar-worthy 640 horsepower through a six-speed manual transmission or optional paddle-shift sequential-manual. The convertible, while not quite up to the coupe’s high standards, still sports a 6.2 liter 580 horsepower V12 that would procure a grin on anyone’s face. Both Murcielago flavors get full time all wheel drive and a kickass electronic traction control system. This kind of horsepower and low weight helps this raging blow through the 0-60mph in the low to mid 3 second range.
“Our products continue to build in popularity and presence in markets across the world,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., commenting on the exceptional production figures. “We consider this latest production pinnacle a confirmation of both our corporate and model strategy.”
Number 3,000 - a Telesto Grey LP640 - is headed to a customer here in the States and it’s been fitted with a black interior contrasted with orange stitching, among just a few of the extra touches Lambo has made to celebrate their achievement. For what it’s worth, it took the Diablo twice as long to sell this many units, we suppose there are a few more connesseurs (nutcases) out there helping things along. Anyone got $313,000 I can borrow?

I’ve seen a couple of these around Cheshire in the UK, where all the Manchester United footballers live; it’s cooler in the flesh than in the pictures!
I’m not surprised they’ve sold this many, they look so cool! It’s like Aston Martin, good cars lead to good sales. Also, there’s a lot of rich people about!
