RIP: Chrysler Crossfire

As promised, the first of four models was officially cut today as Chrysler is being restructured into a leaner, and hopefully, more profitable automaker. This is just the first step, as more than 10,000 jobs are expected to be cut by the end of 2008. Now, back on topic - the Crossfire and its final days.
During its five year production, the Chrysler Crossfire was an exercise in experimentation. Built in Germany as part of Chrysler’s defunct partnership with Mercedes-Benz, with trials in both coupe and roadster form, there have been less than 80,000 total units sold with a paltry 8,216 of those coming from last year. The car just never came close to competing with it’s older platform brother, the original SLK Mercedes roadster.
Speculation points to a possible replacement, the Demon concept which would likely be targeted as a more affordable light weight roadster. And, since it would likely share the same platform as Pontiac Solstice and Mazda Miata/MX5, costs would be minimal and - most importantly - profitability would be maximized.
Oh, and on a similar note, the other Chrysler models facing extinction include the Chrysler Pacifica, PT Cruiser Convertible and the Dodge Magnum. Oh yea, let’s not forget about the jobs of those 10,000 employees either. Yay for American efficiency.
